It’s not often that you get news of an airline joining an alliance but when it does occur admittedly it’s a little exciting, particularly for those who are frequent flyer members of that alliance. With a new airline joining the mix comes a whole host of new reward flights and benefits. This week the big news story was around Air Maroc joining Oneworld. Air Maroc you ask? I admit the name was foreign even to me up to as recent as a few weeks ago when it was circulating around aviation circles as a a Oneworld member rumour. In this case the rumour proved true and for those who are members of Oneworld, this is quite exciting.
Air Maroc will bridge the gap of an African presence, in turn unlocking an array of new African destinations that weren’t available previous under Oneworld. Members of other Oneworld airlines’ frequent flyer schemes will be able to earn and redeem points on numerous destinations to and from the airline’s hub in Casablanca, Morocco. In addition they’ll enjoy status perks such as priority check-in and lounge access when flying on Royal Air Maroc.
The airline is set to join Oneworld mid 2020. I look forward to seeing how the airline will enhance the Oneworld experience when it joins in 18 months.
